DAAN PUNN KARO

philanthropy is the word thats in the mind of everybody (that includes me as well) when going to a blind school or an orphanage . But it often strikes me that are we really helping them or helping ourselves. Is it not our inflated ego that is amplified when we see somebody genuflecting before us. The idea is to get the feeling of being absolute ...GOD...same centuries old ,unreachable human dream . In the end we realize that it is we who were at mercy of the other people. It just takes pico seconds ( thats my style :) ) and table is turned .

I think our country baskets very high percentage of poverty stricken even with our centuries old culture and values of daan punn because somewhere we don't intend to remove the necessatous and just wish to complete a ritual. The approach i support is that we should still be doing it for ourselves but with broadening our thinking , with a belief that it is our aim of life which needs to be fulfilled like all other wishes.
just a vague thought ...u can disagree till you realize the same :)

Watch the movie "Pay it forward"
Actually Parag I guess you hit the nail on the head, we do it for ourselves rather than anything else. At the max we would go is Rs 100 to a charitable trust, rs 10,000 in an occasion where they will call your name and people will applaud for you. When I go to so called "Charitable" functions and they begin "recognising" the donors, "Mr Ahluwalia 10,000 rupaye", it actually sucks.
Moreover the people who get some help also have to rise up to the occasion, at times people take it as an easy way out to earn some money. You won't believe that a guy came to me in Houston, Texas, claiming he is from some temple in Haridwar and is collecting money to renovate it. And I bet he was a fraud, because 1) What he was doing was illegal, you can not go door to door to collect money in US. 2) The reciepts he was having were total fake, 3) Haridwar.... temple... wow who wud go from US to check on that?
And people actually gave him money.
One more funny story, my nearby Church sends money to India for the education of 3 children, they have all huge banners for that, how much they send??? $20 per month.... (I bet they get around 6-7 grands per month just for this cause) if you think this was a joke, consider this, 11 guys went to see those children and their progress from this very very church, ofcourse after collecting money from people on the name of Charity. cost for the trip???? $ 2000 per person.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this.
